Hand over a domain
Pick one domain. Name the tracking nobody sees. Get back an agreement you can copy and hand to someone.
The short version
- Pick one life domain, bills, groceries, appointments, whatever runs on somebody's quiet attention. List the invisible tracking it involves, not just the visible jobs.
- For each piece, name who carries it now and who will take it. What comes out is a plain-text handover agreement in your own words, ready to copy and share.
- Handing over a domain means handing over the noticing, not just the doing. That is the whole point, and it is why "just tell me what to do" never settles anything. Nothing here is saved.
A domain is not a job. Bills is a domain: knowing when the rent leaves the account, which form has a real deadline, that the direct debit is about to fail. The paying is an errand. The tracking is the load. This tool asks you to write the tracking down, part by part, and say out loud who is taking it, so a second person can read the whole shape of it without having to ask.
Before you begin
Do this for one domain, not the whole house at once. Have the two names ready: who carries it now, who is taking it. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
Steps
Step 1 of 4
Your handover agreement
Copy it and hand it over
Select the text below and paste it somewhere you both can read it, a message, a shared note, the fridge. This page keeps nothing.
The month is the price
A domain handover is uncomfortable for about a month, because it will be done differently and sometimes less well. That discomfort is not a sign it is going wrong, it is the actual cost of moving the noticing, and it is lower than the cost of leaving it where it was. The review date you set is there so you notice on purpose instead of quietly taking the domain back.
Worth knowing. The claim that this work exists, and that it falls unevenly by gender, rests on the sociological literature on the second shift and mental load, Hochschild, The Second Shift, 1989, and the survey work after it. It is a consistent finding across studies, but how the work is measured remains contested, so treat the direction as solid and any specific figure as unsettled. The idea of handing over whole domains rather than tasks, and the description of why the load becomes invisible, are our account, not a research finding.
