Words for pushing back on advice

Pick the situation you are in. Two or three sentences that tend to land come back, ready to make your own.

The short version

  • Someone told you what to do and you already sense it will not work. Pick which kind of moment you are in, and the two or three sentences that fit it come back for you to edit and copy.
  • Saying no to a method is not saying no to the help. Most of these lines keep the relationship intact and just move the method.
  • Nothing here is a claim about how anyone's mind works. It is wording that tends to land well, rearranged into something you can send.

The hard part is rarely knowing the advice will not fit you. It is saying so without the conversation turning into whether you are willing to try. Pick the situation below, keep whatever is useful, and change the wording until it sounds like you.

Before you begin

You will pick one situation, then optionally set who you are talking to and how firm you want to sound. Nothing you type or pick is saved.

Worth knowing. Everything here is words, not a position. Sometimes the person is right, you have not tried it, and the honest answer is that you will. Saying so plainly — I have not actually done it, so I cannot tell you it does not work — costs very little, and it makes the next disagreement easier. Nothing in this tool is a claim about how anyone's mind works; it is only wording that tends to land well.

Nothing here is saved or sent anywhere. What you type or pick exists only while this page is open.
