The phone in another room experiment

Not a detox. One controlled test (a task, a duration, a reachability plan) and four runs you log yourself.

The short version

  • Putting the phone face down on the desk is not the same experiment as putting it in another room. The research that started this is about the phone being present, not about it buzzing. This tool sets up the distance version properly.
  • You name one task and a fifty-minute block, answer the reachability question honestly, tick through the silence-and-place-out-of-reach setup, then log three lines after each of four runs.
  • What comes out is a plan and a results log in your own words, ready to copy out. Nothing is saved. Run it once, properly, and you will have your own answer instead of somebody else's.

Most advice here is a lecture about willpower with a screen-time figure attached. What follows is a test: a setup, a duration, and something specific to watch. The one step people skip is the reachability question, if somebody might genuinely need you, being unreachable is a low background worry that costs more than the phone did. So this tool asks it first, and builds you a hole in the wall rather than pretending the wall is fine.

Before you begin

You will need about five minutes now to set the experiment up, then four fifty-minute blocks across one week to run it. Have paper and a pen nearby, a note you would otherwise put in your phone is a reason to pick the phone up. Nothing you type is saved.

Worth knowing. Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos (Journal of the Association for Consumer Research 2(2), 2017) found that the mere presence of one’s own phone reduced available cognitive capacity, even when it was switched off and face down. That is the entire basis for asking you to move it rather than silence it.

Nothing here is saved or sent anywhere. What you type exists only while this page is open.
